Final Project Proposal

For my final project in my spatial history class, I would like to create an interactive StoryMap or dashboard. I am more familiar with the StoryMap layout, but I have read that a dashboard may be a better option for my idea. I would like to create something similar to the Overlands Trails map (https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/overlandtrails/#loc=5/-5.200/0.330&date=1/1/1840) and how it showcases movement of individuals across the nation.

I will be working if a data set put together by undergraduates in the HIST 214: Public History class, where they gathered and imputed the data into google forms. This information is about USC alumni that attended or graduated from USC during reconstruction. USC during reconstruction had become integrated for only four years, before once again becoming a white only university on South Carolina.

I would like to use this date to create migration lines, in a sense, of where the students during reconstruction came from and where they went after attending USC. Looking at the data so far there is a wide mix of people, some went on to become lawyers, doctors, mayors while others went back to family practices and farms. It will be interesting to see the reach of the USC reconstruction era alumni and what they might have done after their attendance.

  1. I'm excited about the approach that you're taking to these data, Lelia, and think these migration lines could really illustrate some of the key trends. I look forward to learning more about what you have read about dashboard v. StoryMaps tomorrow in class.
